For the sixth time, Germany's biggest photo festival has gathered national and international photographers in Berlin, drawing attention to the city as a center for European photography. A wide selection of exhibitions, events, and publications will hone viewers' gaze for the photographic medium. Memory Lab: The Sentimental Turn, the central show at the photography biennial, was conceived by a team of European curators specifically for the participating capitals: Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Paris, and Vienna. The Berlin version will be shown in the Martin-Gropius-Bau, which will also serve as the festival center. The publication with its photo sequences, short descriptions, and articles provides information on all of the festival's 124 exhibitions while also cutting a swath through the various themes represented: historical aspects, vision and existence, personal encounters, societal changes, and social portraits come together to form the overarching theme Umbrüche und Utopien. Das andere Europa (Upheavals and Utopias. The Other Europe). The catalog offers a kaleidoscope of photographic and artistic works over the last 100 years up to today.
