Alexis Cottin Chais / Cellars

Wine cellars are mysterious. Silent cathedrals, these spaces shelter a slow and continuous transformation. Wine evolves continuously, in absolute darkness imparted by the oak barrels. A cellar must guarantee three factors: a stable temperature, a constant hygrometry and a controlled darkness. The rest is pure creativity, uncorrelated to winemaking. Modern architectural creations, troglodyte caves, raw or noble material, the choices have no other purpose than useless grace. These uniques places, where substance and form miraculously meet, allowed Alexis Cottin to capture photographs revealing the human aspiration for beauty.

The book gives a unique insight into 40 cellars of renowned Bordeaux estates: Château Angélus (BPM Architectes & Jean-Pierre Erath), Château Beauregard (Oliver Chadebost), Château Beychevelle (BPM Architectes), Château Canon (Atelier des Architectes Mazières), Château Cheval Blanc (Christian de Portzamparc), Château Clerc Milon (Atelier des Architectes Mazières & Richard Peduzzi), Château Couhins (Atelier des Architectes Mazières & BPM Architectes), Château Ducru-Beaucaillou (Luc Arsène-Henry Jr & Alain Triaud Architectes), Château du Glana (Bertrand Digneaux), Château Grand Corbin (Action Archi Arnaud Architectes Associés), Château Gruaud Larose (Atelier des Architectes Mazières), Château Kirwan (A3A Architecture), Château La Conseillante (Atelier des Architectes Mazières), Château La Dominique (Jean Nouvel), Château La Fleur de Bouärd (BPM Architectes), Château La Gaffelière (Olivier Chadebost), Château La Tour de Bessan (Justin-Defos du Rau Architecture),
