Ansgar Nierhoff Zu einem aus einem Skulpturen im öffentlichen Raum

With art in public space, the artist departs from his safe haven. This demands courage, stamina, and self-confidence. In just under 35 years, Ansgar Nierhoff has realized more than 60 sculpture projects in public space in Germany and worked out numerous prizewinning designs for monuments and squares. In the center of his artistic work has always been the question of how sculpture affects people in specific sites under conditions of autonomy: How are viewers drawn into the aesthetic process? Can sculpture highlight details of what we see every day – or even make them visible at all? What potentials does it release? This dialog between artwork and viewer is a central aspect of the book Ansgar Nierhoff: TO ONE FROM ONE and is thoroughly treated in articles by Manfred Schneckenburger, Christoph Brockhaus, Justus Jonas, and others. This first summarizing depiction and discussion of the exterior sculptures of Ansgar Nierhoff illuminates not only the actual core of his oeuvre, but beyond that also provides important stimuli for thinking about the theme of "art in public space", as well as about the issue of public and private engagement for culture. Ansgar Nierhoff, born in Meschede in 1941, teaches as a Professor for Sculpture at the Academy for Visual Arts in Mainz. In 1988, he was elected a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin. He took part in documenta 6 in Kassel and has had numerous solo exhibitions in Germany and abroad, including at the Kunsthalle Köln, Duisburg's Lehmbruck Museum, the Essener Folkwang Museum, the Kunsthalle Mannheim, the Sprengel Museum, Hanover, and the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna.
