D-day, the Prague Spring, the Islamic revolution, Srebrenica, 9/11, Verdun, Saigon's surrender – these historic events have etched themselves into worldwide collective memory. Every year, people try to keep the memory of the past alive on selected days, often with lavish festivities and public rituals. Why do we do this? Anniversaries are important monuments of time and a way of affirming the identity of nations, political communities or ideological movements. They demonstrate what freedom, tyranny, oppression, and liberation really mean for us. This form of commemoration brings people together and moves them, but it can also be polarizing. It can produce joy or sorrow, hope or despair as it opens up emotional spaces for recollection. Since 2004, the photographer Marc Beckmann has been observing military parades, official state occasions, moments of silence, and demonstrations taking place on anniversaries all over the world. He diverges from the often strictly prescribed protocol to focus his lens instead on quiet observations at the margins of the individual events. Rather than reproducing a predetermined point of view and interpretation, he therefore manages to reveal how history is handled, staged, and used as a tool by those who rule our present-day world.
