By applying the laws of nature to historical events, Friedrich believed he and his contemporaries could legitimately anticipate the coming of a "new era." This publication for the first time explores the political and historical dimension of the art of C. D. Friedrich. The dissertation on Friedrich by Peter Märker, longstanding director of the Graphic Art Collection of the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt, is published here for the first time in book form.
