Chen Ke Paintings 2003-2009

Various images of little girls, representing the core of human nature, run like a thread through the works of Chen Ke (*1978), one of the most prominent emerging young artists from China. Even though references to cartoon art are obvious, when analyzing her works in more detail, style elements from Western master artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, as well as the influence of traditional Chinese paintings become visible, creating an exciting tension. Being keen to experiment Chen Ke surprises her viewers oftentimes. Not only she manufactures her own paper, embroiders canvases with beads but also applies oil color on stretched cotton fabrics being popular in her childhood days. The 30-year-old female artist and her artworks have been featured in exhibitions at venues including the National Art Museum of China in Beijing and the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Vienna. The publication represents the first overview of Chen Ke's work in the West.
