Franz Gertsch is one of the most prominent Swiss artists and a primary representative of Photorealism and Hyperrealism. His large-format portraits of rock poetess Patti Smith and of the young painter Luciano Castelli made him famous. From a chronicler of the "wild 70s", he developed into a delicate-sensed observer of nature. In the mid-1980s, he began creating his first woodcuts with motifs from nature. With this volume, Gertsch publishes for the first time a selection of his own texts. His simple and precise short prose develops its own strange fascination. It testifies to the artist's outstanding capacity for observation, to the time he takes for his works, and above all to his love of nature and of people. Franz Gertsch was born in 1930 and lives and works in Rüschegg and Bern. His works have been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, at the Venice Biennial, and at the documenta in Kassel. In 2002, the Museum Franz Gertsch was opened in Burgdorf, Switzerland.
