A total of 90 groups of objects from the Forbidden City in Beijing provide insights into the claim to universal power made by the emperors of China and illuminate the traditional ideal of the harmoniously ordered state from the point of view of the imperial court. Outstanding works of art illustrate the taste and lifestyle, but also the world view, of the Chinese emperors of the 17th and 18th centuries. Official portraits, ceremonial robes, a monumental set of chimes and a complete throne ensemble, along with cult objects and unique porcelain pieces produced by the imperial manufactories give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at court life. Astronomical instruments brought to China by European Jesuit missionaries, for instance the Cologne-born astronomer Adam Schall by Bell, bear witness to Asian interest in Western science. At the Palace Museum, thousands of years of Chinese civilization and traditions come to life. The Forbidden City was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The exhibition Splendor of the Emperors of China: Art and Life in the Forbidden City celebrates 25 years of the twinning arrangement between Beijing and Cologne and the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Germany.
