Inka Lindergård & Niclas Holmström Watching Humans Watching

The book is comprised of two series by artist duo Lindergård and Holström that share the same concept of human observation. For the series "Watching Humans Watching" (2008–2010), they captured the dynamic between humans and nature by taking an objective approach to their subjects, much like the way wildlife photographers document wild animals. Lindergård and Holmström had no interaction with the people they photographed. Each picture explores man's disconnected relationship with nature, as if there were a wall between them and the environment. The "Saga" series (2009–2011) was photographed in almost the same places as Watching Humans Watching. This time the artists actively intervened in the surrounding nature by using painted props and colored smoke-bombs as means to deal with their own mystification of nature, influenced by myths and fairy tales. Inka Lindergård (b. 1985 in Finland) and Niclas Holmström (b.1984 in Sweden) live and work together in Stockholm, Sweden. They are the winners of the Swedish Photo Book Prize 2012, which has been awarded annually by the Association of Swedish Photographers since 1996. The jury's reasoning: "Inka Lindergård & Niclas Holmström bring new life to landscape photography and the way we look at the intersection between humans and nature. With their unconventional and associative style and an imagery, that is simultaneously historic and contemporary, they approach nature as the Big Unknown. The playful book design conveys personal as well as surprising perspectives."
