Jáchym Fleig Kollateral

Jáchym Fleig is one of the well-known younger representatives of a new contextual mode of sculpture. His works extend the traditional concept of what sculpture can be by deliberately tying it into its respective living urban environment. This idea of integrating sculptures into their surroundings gives them the character of a temporary installation, surrounded by external conditions that are subject to constant change. His works are part of a continuous, dynamic process of intervention in which the sculptures are confronted with their environment. Through their presence and aura they are connected with their surroundings and their surroundings with them. Moreover, the usually organic-seeming structures of his works seem to be constantly growing and proliferating, a quality contradicted by the rigid material they are made out of, in most cases concrete. Jáchym Fleig (b. 1970 in Villingen-Schwenningen) has received honors including the Wilhelm-Lehmbruck Fellowship of the City of Duisburg and was an artist-in-residence at Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems.
