"I want my pictures to be luxurious and appealing. I don't mind if they are experienced as sensual, although I see them as abstract and essentially conceptual," says Julia Jansen (b. 1972). The Frankfurt Städelschule graduate exhibited a Birkenwald (Birch Forest), an empty living room labeled Untitled and a small-format Zelt (Tent) in 1999. These were followed by still lifes, birds and numerous landscapes: rather unspectacular constellations of motifs from easily identifiable contexts. What sets them apart is that it is impossible in each case to focus in on the image; the picture refuses to jell, and our perception is confounded by the uncertainty of what we are seeing in this liminal world between what may possibly be real or perhaps only a potential reality. This bewilderingly beautiful imagery thus eludes immediate access, occupying an indeterminate time and place all its own. (Annelie Pohlen)
