Klaus Lutz Im Universum

The films made by the artist Klaus Lutz (1940 – 2009) demonstrate an inimitable cinematic language, summoning memories of Expressionist film of the 1920s, of Georges Méliès and of the agitprop films of the Russian avant-garde. For Lutz, drawing was always the point of departure for the artistic process. In 1985, he added filmmaking to his repertoire, taking recourse to a technique that seems almost nostalgic in the age of digital imagery and animation – the 16mm film camera. Using cartoon and classic film collage techniques, Lutz created singular and aesthetically arresting works. His scripts tell fast-paced stories that invariably pit the individual – the artist himself – against the rest of the world. This exhibition catalog highlights the diversity of the artist's fascinating œvre, which encompasses drawings, dry point etchings, installations, performances and 16mm films.
