Monika Merva The City of Children

During several visits since 2002, Monika Merva has photographed everyday life at a Hungarian government housing facility for children from dysfunctional and poverty stricken families. "The City of Children" was founded in the late 1950s, a period when the Hungarian social welfare system emphasized collective solutions to private problems. "Having visited The City of Children many times over the years, I have become increasingly impressed by its quiet, and often hidden, power and beauty… I believe the home is where our strength lies. It's the source of everything – where all our fears, questions, love, and a sense of belonging originate." (Monika Merva) Monika Merva (*1969) workes as a freelance photographer for several magazines, including The New Yorker, Details, and New York Times Magazine. Her work is in public collections such as the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, George Eastman House, Hungarian Museum of Photography, and the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Art Collection. She has exhibited at many international venues, including the Griffin Museum, Winchester, the The RayKo Photo Center, San Francisco, The International House, New York. "The City of Children" will have a solo show at FotoFest Houston 2012. "Children generally know whom to trust, especially those who've experienced hardships. Monika Merva brought empathy and compassion as well as skill to this project and we can feel it in the children's responses. They allowed her into their private spaces and she's honored their trust with vivid, memorable portraits."
