Phoebe Washburn COMPESHITSTEM - the new deal

Phoebe Washburn (*1973) takes up themes like globalization and ecology in her work, exploring them in imposing large-scale installations. She frequently turns to found materials, giving them a new function within the artwork and thus creating new frames of reference. In what is her largest installation to date, designed expressly for the kestnergesellschaft and entitled Compeshitstem – the new deal, used t-shirts are a component of the piece; in fact, the water used to wash them flows later through hoses and vessels that resemble aquariums and then through filter systems to be cleaned and used again. Looking something like a big laboratory or an improvised factory, the piece thus continues to function virtually without the introduction of new raw materials. A critique of consumer society or an appeal for more environmental awareness are of secondary importance for the New York artist, however, whose constructions evince more pragmatism than ideology. Washburn's works were shown at the Deutsche Guggenheim/Berlin (2007) and the Whitney Biennial/New York (2008), amongst others.
