Rolf Spinnler

The early work of Swiss painter and graphic artist Rolf Spinnler (1927-2000), created in the fifties and sixties, was a significant contribution to the representational art of the postwar period. His impressive landscapes and sensitive portraits are dominated by the expressiveness typical of the existentialist worldview of the time. Perceptible as a model in some works is Georges Rouault, in others Alberto Giacometti. Relating to the latter are the pencil drawings, in particular, which are given much space in this book, because they are among the best in Swiss draftsmanship. The signature of the drawings also determines Spinnler's painting up to and including his late work. This first comprehensive publication on the work of Rolf Spinnler includes a text by the writer Peter Bichsel, who sheds light on his friendship with the unusual artist.
