Städel Museum Malerei in Fotografie Strategien der Aneignung

The publication "Painting in Photography – Strategies in Appropriation" illuminates on the basis of selected photographic works how painting has influenced image production in contemporary artistic photography. While, after 1960, the field of painting added new categories under pressure from documentary photography and its mass-media proliferation, a strong engagement with painterly requirements and techniques can conversely be observed among contemporary photographers. In many cases, photographs reflect, imitate, appropriate or represent the more traditional pictorial medium. Taking the museum's own collection as starting point, the Frankfurt Städel Museum presents artists such as Sherrie Levine and Louise Lawler, who began in the late 1970s to appropriate originals from the history of art for their photographs, along with younger photographers such as Amelie von Wulffen, who transforms her photographed city views by overpainting them, and Wolfgang Tillmans, whose abstract works are not recognizable depic- tions of the visible world at all. Works by further artists, such as John Baldessari and Jeff Wall, will also be on view. Link to Städel Museum: http://www.staedelmuseum.de/sm/index.php?StoryID=1190&websiteLang=en
