At the core of his new book, Der Schatten der Baracke, Stefan Moritz Becker introduces one of his last works: a 12 meter long sculpture in the Bürgerpark Oberföhring, the former site of a Luftwaffe military hospital at Munich's outskirts. This sculpture serves as point of origin as well as conclusion for Becker's reflections about the aesthetics of fascism. Around this replica of a "Baracke" (barracks), which has physical materiality long with the immateriality of sunlight as a topic, he arranges fragmental traces of the National Socialist era that correspond with his personal chain of associations: postcards from the Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labor Service), original dressing materials, images of barracks of the former Luftwaffe military hospital Munich-Oberföhring, signs on a former railroad engineering depot which was operated by forced workers, but also excerpts from an interview with Joseph Beuys… His research leads Becker to old bunker facilities and the concentration camp memorial in Dachau until he lastly arrives at this very Reichsarbeitsdienst-barracks (RAD), which he thought to be one of the most important buildings of the time. He asks himself what the barracks were used for, which role they played for the functioning of the political system of the "Third Reich," and how they are being used today, often without the knowledge of the historical dimension. Becker understands light to be one of the central topics of his work. During his 1995 project, Licht im Lazarett, realized at the same location, he created shadows through drawings on wall and floor, just as they were moving through space, thanks to changing incidence of light.
