Thorn

Fascinated by the possibilities inherent in simple geometric and physical construction principles, Günter Thorn creates minimalist sculptures out of glass whose hallmark is a charged tension between the unstable equilibrium of the structure and the fragile material from which it is made. The ability of these figures with their human dimensions to maintain their balance is questioned anew in each work, throwing the viewers perception back onto himself and his own limitations. This book shows an extensive series of works by the Cologne artist, which the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf also exhibited in its newly opened Glasmuseum Hentrich, including for example "EINE GRUPPE," a room installation comprising life-size yet filigree sculptures from the years 1991-2006. Günter Thorn studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and lives and works today in Cologne.
