Dubbed by Hitler the "Capital of the Movement", Munich served from the start as an ideological center for National Socialism. The significance of the city is quintessentially reflected in posters depicting Hitler, the power of the Nazi dictatorship and the promises of "ethnic community". During the Nazi era, virtually every poster fulfilled a political function, forming a constant visual reminder of the goals and values of those in power. Their imagery was designed to make the dominant ideology sensually appealing and thereby more effective. The book introduces a fund of posters that were distributed, and often de- signed and printed, in Munich between 1933 and 1945, but are of interest beyond the region. The typography and imagery in the posters and the biog- raphies of the artists responsible are described against the backdrop of the history of the events and institutions that shaped them. The themes range from party propaganda and announcements of cultural events to sports and fashion. Advertising pillars and billboards served as a place to trumpet the ideological convictions that pervaded all areas of National Socialist society.
