Zhou Jun Ein chinesischer Tuschmaler der Gegenwart

The Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst (Museum of East Asian Art) in Cologne is putting on the first European exhibition of the work of Zhou Jun (*1955), an outstanding contemporary protagonist of modern Chinese painting who has been living in the Netherlands since 1989. Zhou Jun makes masterful use of the traditional Chinese artistic tools of brush, ink and paper. This catalog shows around 100 works from the traditional genres of figures, flowers and birds as well as landscape painting, tracing the development of the artist from his beginnings in the academic Socialist Realist style to his universes of today. Zhou Jun has been painting these almost futuristic-looking monumental landscapes since the 1990s. They have allowed him to free himself from the legacy of Socialist Realism and to draw instead on the Taoist tradition of ink play. The universes do not represent real worlds but rather inner or mental landscapes, which take the form of large-format, multi-part cycles of desolate, sometimes ghostly-looking scenes incorporating text.
