ZKM | Museum für Neue Kunst Bernhard Sandfort

The artist Bernhard Sandfort (b. 1936) has consistently espoused a strict concept of painting since the early 1960s – setting him apart from Art Informel and Tachisme. The arrangement of elements in his pictures is governed by fixed compositional rules, while at the same time daring to verge on randomness. Sandfort has coined for his work the terms "metastatic" and "dialogic" painting. With the opening of the Galerie für kollektive Kunst in 1969 in Berlin, the artist began to devote his energies to socio-political causes. Sandfort began seeking ways to bring art to the customer directly, without the usual art-market detours. In his producer-run gallery Augenladen in Mannheim, Sandfort still organizes today not only exhibitions but also events on socio-political issues. One of his current projects is the virtual Museum of Questions.
